Knowing yourself takes work

Getting to know yourself requires significant personal work, but it's well worth it. Read why in this article.
know you

This may be “know yourself” It may sound trite. It's a well-used piece of advice, a catch-all phrase that can be used as advice in almost any situation, yet knowing ourselves It is a very important task that can help us stay grounded when things get unstable.

The philosopher Alain De Botton proposes that the fact of Not knowing who we are is a fundamental wound that prevents us from becoming what we could be. Explains:

Without knowing who we are, we tend to have particular trouble dealing with denigration or flattery. If others decide we're worthless or bad, there's nothing in us to stop us from swallowing their verdicts whole, no matter how misguided, extreme, or unpleasant they may be. We will be defenseless before the court of public opinion. We will always ask others what we deserve before looking within for an answer.

Knowing yourself is not always an easy task.

It's part of being human and the society we've formed to seek approval from others for many things. However, if you identify with De Botton's explanation and tend to make exhausting efforts to please people you don't even hold in high regard, or if even the most constructive criticism hurts you, it's important that You muster up the courage and do the work necessary to learn more about who you are, how you got to be who you are, and, of course, how far you would like to go.

It's not just about knowing what you like and what you don't like—that's simple. We're talking about your way of thinking, how you react to things, the patterns you put into action when interacting with others, and so on. Logically, this entails a personal work for which psychotherapy can help you. Although you can also pay more attention and analyze your internal dialogue, meditate, write… you decide what is most convenient at this moment.

Remember: No one is born with the ability to magically know who they are. Rather, we go building and modifying our identity Over time, our relationships, thoughts, behaviors and actions.

The better you know yourself, the more original your thinking will be, and the more capable you will be of taking responsibility for your life. As a result, you will be able to transform it in a way that is satisfying to you.
